Starting Your American Family Claim

American Family policies are usually sold through local agents, and claims can be reported to your agent, online, in the app or by phone. An American Family claims representative will then be assigned to your claim.

When you come in, it helps to bring your claim number, your adjuster's name and phone number, your policy card and any photos you took at the scene. If you do not have all of that yet, bring the vehicle anyway and we will help you work out the rest.

Do I Have to Use a American Family-Recommended Shop?

No. American Family may suggest shops, but Kentucky law gives you the right to choose where your vehicle is repaired. If you choose AutoMax, we work with American Family on your behalf. We submit our estimate and photos to your adjuster and answer their questions so you are not stuck relaying messages.

Hidden Damage and Supplements

An initial estimate often misses damage that is only visible once panels and bumpers come off. When we find something extra, we stop, photograph it, write a supplement and send it to your American Family adjuster for approval before continuing, so your claim and your repair both stay accurate.

If Your Car Is Not Drivable

Tell your American Family claim representative where the car is, and ask whether your policy includes towing and rental reimbursement. We can start the estimate as soon as the vehicle arrives, and structural damage is checked with a full structural damage assessment.

Can I use AutoMax if I have American Family Insurance?

Yes. You can choose any repair shop. We will communicate with your American Family claims representative about the estimate, photos and any supplements.

What if my American Family adjuster wants to inspect the car first?

That is fine. We can hold off on repairs until the inspection happens, and we can share our teardown photos and notes with the adjuster so the inspection goes faster.

Will my American Family repair include ADAS calibration if it is needed?

If the repair touches bumpers, windshields, mirrors or sensors, cameras and radar may need recalibration. We will tell you when that applies and include it in the repair plan. See our ADAS calibration service.
